This week’s Plant Record
(For a bit of fun, every Friday our Plant Records Manager, Chris Bisson, the guy who maintains all the recorded information on our plant collections, will do a regular blog slot where he recommends his favourite “plant records” – that is, songs that are in some way linked to a plant. (Do you see what we did there?) )
‘Pepper’ – Butthole Surfers (1996)
Peppers (Capsicum sp.) are tasty and interesting! Not only do they add a distinctive flavour to many of our favourite foods, sometimes really adding a spicy kick, they are also related to potatoes and tomatoes! Cor’ blimey the Solanaceae Family really does cater for our Homo sapien tastebuds!
The Butthole Surfers, formed in 1981, really opened the doors for loads of 90′s psychadelic artists. Supporting the Dead Kennedys and T.S.O.L. in their early days, these guys have really explored the fun chaotic side of their genre.

I’ve already made my comments on Facebook. But I really am appalled by this tasteless selection of noise. This is tackier than X Factor, and the link between plants and this rubbish in not even tenuous, it doesn’t exist.
Do not try to tell me this is ‘art’. As a modern, conceptual artist I could get into a discussion about the definition of art if you’d like, but my main concern is for the reputation of the Eden Project. How your bosses can allow you free rein to broadcast tasteless, vulgar stuff like this I cannot imagine, and I question their motives for doing so.
I also question my support of what was once an inspirational concept. (Just so you know, my last visit was only last week.)
We’re sorry you’re disappointed by our Plant Records series. At Eden we’re passionate about plants and we put this blog together to highlight how much plants are part of our everyday lives, and how we tend to take it for granted. We know that the links are sometimes a little tenuous, but we hope to offer people a bit of fun on a Friday afternoon.
Thank you for your eventual reply.
My point is that it is vulgar and in bad taste. It is also insulting to the intelligence of many of your supporters. It is interesting but sad that in order to fulfill your educational role, you have stooped to such depths. I do not see why such a worthy and reputable organisation needs to waste supporters’ money on a resident DJ. Are there no better ways to scrape support and attract visitors? It just makes me question the sort of organisation you have become, how you assess your public’s mindset, and whether I stilll want to support the Eden Project.
I don’t normally reply to things like this but I think Suzanne is missing the point, this is a fun way for Eden to communicate plant information, lots of teaching methods like this are used in schools these days, it is only a bit of fun and I for one enjoy the plant records bit every week, some tracks are a bit different from what i’d normally listen to but that’s fine, clearly some people enjoy them.
It’s a bit of fun, right? Come on Suzanne, really.
Hannah, please continue to stoop to such depths!
I’m a supporter and fully support this too! Eden is meant to be about a whole way of life, not just a glorified garden. It’s great that they are trying to widen thier audience it get more then the green brigade into the Eden project. What is wrong with a bit of fun? In todays depressing climate we could do with more of it.
Im a big buthole surfers fan – they have always been an alternative band and definately are not out of tune with what Eden is meant to represent – is someone really upset by this track ? Weird.
my favorite band, this song rocks x
I think it is all too easy to get confused or irritated about the definition of art. The truth is art is what you think it is “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and all that. Mind you I also think some people need an optitian, but of course that is merely my opinion and opinions are only important to those that hold them. They are neither right nor wrong.
Ahhh – a conceptual artist complaining about the Buthole surfers. Well like most conceptual artists – who believe that a glass of water, a messy bed and a cow sawn in half, you obviously dont have a clue what art is. The Buthole surfers have about as much in common with the x factor as Tracy emin has with Van Gogh – ie none whatsoever ( Van gogh had talent). All I can say is before I was 30 percent behind Eden – now with the advent of this Buthole surfers track and the fact you have managed to annoy a pious conceptual artist – I am 101 percent behind them. Well done eden !
