December 17, 2010
Author: Mikki
If you’re looking for a cheap but very cheerful way to decorate your house or tree for the festive season, try making these ‘dough’corations! You can let your creativity run wild, and the whole family, from kids to grandparents, can get involved in making them.
You will need:
- plain flour
- salt
- water
- rolling pin
- cup
- mixing bowl
- cookie cutters
- paint
- glitter
- string or ribbon
- a good imagination
Follow these simple steps:
- Decide on the cup your going to use (coffee mugs work well) and measure out 2 cups of plain flour. Add this to a mixing bowl.
- Measure out 1 cup of salt. Also add this to the mixing bowl.
- Fill the cup with water and slowly add to the dry mix.
- Once you have a ball of dough, roll it out flat onto a floured surface.
- Use cookie cutters to create shapes or cut out your own using a blunt knife, such as a kids’ plastic knife (always be careful of fingers!).
- Use the sharp end of a pencil to create holes in your decorations (for hanging them). You can also use it to add small dots/patterns to the dough.
- You can use the microwave to dry the dough (2-3 minutes) or a cool oven (200F) for 3-4 hours.
- Once hardened, use your choice of paint, glitter or anything else you can find to colour and decorate your salt dough shapes.
- Once the paint/glitter is dry, thread your string or ribbon through the holes in your shapes.
- Now, get ‘dough’corating!
