Knitting created by Eden visitors provides winter warmth for homeless

Hundreds of our visitors have helped create patchwork blankets for a local homeless charity during several knitting marathons at Eden.

Keen knitters and amateurs alike got their needles clicking at our Hive of Activity in November and December, a series of creative workshops here on site. They added metres of new rows to the ‘river of blue’ knitting that visitors created a few years ago to raise awareness of World Water Day.

It was our knitting visitors who gave us the idea of donating the blankets to a homeless charity. We chose St Austell-based Cosgarne Hall, one of the partners in Eden’s Great Day Out programme for homeless people, offenders and excluded young people (see photo, bottom right).

As well as giving something positive to the local community, Eden’s Carla Wentick, who led the project, said it gave a lot of pleasure to the people who made the beautiful blankets too: “Knitting at Eden was an immediate hit. It gave people a chance to relax for a while and chat. It’s the type of activity that provides an instant feeling of community.”
