This week’s Plant Record: The Seed, by The Roots

As a bit of fun for the weekend Chris Bisson, the guy who maintains all the recorded information on Eden’s plant collection as our Plant Records Manager, recommends his favourite “plant records” – that is, songs that are in some way linked to a plant.

This week’s tune: ‘The Seed’, by The Roots

Well, what can I say about this plant record? Seeds aren’t only vital for plants themselves, for reproduction and distribution, but we humans we use them for all sorts of food. Take cereals, for example. Oats, barley, wheat, corn, you name it, they’re all in fact seeds!

As for roots, they of course perform an extremely important role in plants too, providing structural rigidity as well as enabling the transport of water and nutrients.

Formed in 1987, Philadelphian hip hop outfit The Roots really keep to the original values of their genre. Hip hop doesn’t have to be all about shiny cars, bling and big bankrolls; what about lyrical agility and clever musical arrangements?

I do like The Roots.
