On 11 October 2011 we’re hosting a half-day event for Cornish companies to find out about the low-carbon business opportunities in the county and to understand what national carbon reduction policies mean for local firms.

With cabinet ministers having agreed a legally binding ‘green deal committing the UK to two decades of drastic cuts in carbon emissions, there will be sweeping changes to the way that businesses operate, deal with customers and trade with each other.

This conference is all about how Cornish companies will adapt. High-profile speakers and inspiring local case studies have been chosen to make the event as relevant as possible for small- or medium-sized enterprises within Cornwall. On the agenda are questions such as:

  • How can businesses in Cornwall react and adapt to changes in environmental regulation?
  • What are the opportunities for local businesses as the public sector introduces low-carbon procurement policies for its massive spend?
  • How does understanding carbon support your bottom line?
  • What is a carbon footprint? What does it include? How do you measure and calculate it?
  • How do you begin to reduce your carbon footprint? What have other organisations done?
  • What does ‘carbon neutral’ mean, and how can your business aim for this?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities, for local businesses, of sustainable supply chains?

Speakers include:

  • Chair of the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 Shaun McCarthy.
  • Carbon footprinting specialist Mike Berners-Lee.
  • Trewithen Dairy’s Bill Clarke, and Chaffins’ Stephen Brown, whose Cornish-based businesses have already begun a low-carbon journey.
  • Dr Fernando Correia, from the University of Exeter’s Business School, who delivers leadership training with a focus on low-carbon operations and sustainable supply chains.
  • Ross Harling, founder of Naturepaint, the first SME in the West Country to get a prestigious Carbon Reduction Certificate from the Carbon Trust.
  • David Wathey, Head of Sustainable Procurement at the NHS, one of the biggest purchasers in the country.
  • Home Retail Group’s Amy Whidburn, giving an insight into the CSR practices of the group behind the Homebase and Argos chains.
  • Cornwall College Business’s Justin Olosunde, who will offer an overview of the types of carbon management training and support available to Cornish businesses.

The event is being organised by Clear About Carbon, a European Social Fund financed project with a mission to find new ways to increase carbon and climate awareness within businesses and the public sector. It’s run by the Eden Project, the University of Exeter Business School and Centre for Leadership Studies, Cornwall Development Company, and Duchy College Rural Business School.
