Outdoor painting with a difference

As part of our Festival of Play season, we’re offering loads of ideas for games and activities on the themes of outdoor play and circus fun to keep your kids occupied this summer.

Looking for something quick and easy to keep the kids entertained this summer? Try out our homemade outdoor floor paint. It’s simple to make and will keep the the whole family busy for hours. Here at Eden we have painted hopscotches, games and trails onto our paths to keep the young (and old) entertained!


You need a stretch of paving or wall to get started - a drive way or garden patio is perfect. You’ll also need some brushes or, if you fancy getting really messy, you can use your hands and feet too. We’ve also enjoyed making prints from leaves, wheels, twigs, plant pots and other items found in the garden.

To make the paint:

  • Use an old container to mix 1/4 cup of water with 1/4 cup of cornflour
  • Stir until well mixed.
  • Now add a few drops of food colouring
  • Be careful with how much food colouring you use – too much could leave faint stains on the surfaces
  • Once mixed, start painting

    Thats it!  As soon as you’re ready to clean up, simply use water and a brush to wash away the paints.

      We visited last Monday and thoroughly enjoyed the day. What a wonderful site you have there! We have 2 children Alex (6) and Matilda (3) who both enjoyed the water-play – a welcome relief with the sunshine. We didn’t make it into the Den building but from what i could see it looked like lots of fun. Thanks for an education and inspiring day out!
