Hope
Make your way to the giant balloon in the Rainforest Biome to hear a story and a song of hope, and to see our pond covered with glistening candles, in an ancient Thai tradition.

Time

Live music at Eden Project Cafe in St Austell, Cornwall, this weekend

November 23, 2011
Author: Hannah

We’ve put together a fab programme of live music events at our Café in St Austell town centre. The Café, a bright, spacious, eco-building, is open until the wee hours and we serve warming food until late.

This Friday we’re delighted to host post-rock duo Nordic Giants, as well as piano prodigy Samuel Osmond.

Hidden behind feathered masks and effortlessly changing between instruments, Nordic Giants perform live, original soundtracks to a backdrop of award winning short films.

They’re influenced by the likes of Sigur Ros, Massive Attack and Cinematic Orchestra and their music includes dreamy ambient swells, epic builds and huge moments of power.

Two men from the band wearing masks standing in a forest

Imagine the visual story telling of a cinema experience mixed with the raw energy and passion of a live gig, and you’ve hit the nail on the head! You can listen to their music at www.myspace.com/nordicgiants

Local piano prodigy Samuel Osmond is set to amaze us with his performance of Debussy and Rachmaninoff, amongst others. Sam is currently learning to read music and has only been playing the piano for two years, yet is able to recite extremely complex compositions from musical memory.

He learns the pieces, which take more experienced pianists years to master, in an incredibly short period of time, working out the notes by ear.

The gig takes place at the Eden Project Café in White River Place, St Austell. Tickets cost £5 (or £4 if you buy them in advance at the café). Doors open at 8pm, music starts and 9pm, and doors close at 11.15pm. We’ll be serving delicious Chick Pea & Pumpkin Curry served until 9.30pm.

Christmas flowers that are good enough to eat

November 17, 2011
Author: admin

We love our new, inspired Christmas flowers. They have lots of seasonal flair but with an extra special twist. You can cook with them.

Working closely with our local grower, Tregothnan, we’ve created a range of bouquets, wreaths and garlands that look traditional, with their rich, wintery reds and wonderful evergreens  and are made using chillies, bay, sage and rosemary so you can cook with them as well.

Christmas Wreath

Our traditional Christmas wreath is wonderfully aromatic with its chillies, rosemary and bay, and will look lovely hung on a front door or given as a present. It’s looks so good that after Christmas you can let it dry out and keep it to use throughout the year.

Festive Table Decoration

A beautiful table decoration that will look and smell fantastic at any festive dinner, bringing a new dimension to the traditional red and green centrepiece. Alternatively, pop it on a mantlepiece where its simple candle will provide some light and cheer during the winter evenings.

Festive Chilli Bouquet

This festive chilli hand-tied bouquet is a brilliant alternative to a classic Christmas bouquet and will bring a smile to anyone you decide to send it to. Not only does it look beautiful, they’ll love the fact they can they can use the bouquet to spice up their cooking over Christmas. A fantastic gift for foodies.

Festive Winter Garland

A festive Winter garland packed with fresh bay and chillies that will be a real talking point over Christmas.  You can use it as an aromatic runner for your Christmas table or as a traditional Christmas decoration on a mantelpiece or bannister.

All our festive flowers are grown in the UK, so our ‘flower miles’ are low, and come with free delivery. We also take orders now for delivery nearer Christmas.

Sowing the seeds of Britain’s biggest flower, Titan Arum

November 17, 2011
Author: Guest

Remember the giant Corpse flower that caused a stir in the Rainforest Biome when it bloomed for a few rare days this summer? Well our gardeners have just harvested its ripened fruits, to collect seeds for a new plant.

Gardener collecting Titan Arum seeds in Eden's Rainforest BiomeEach gorgeous orange fruit contains one or two seeds, which we’re now extracting in our nursery ready to sow.

The plant is native to Western Sumatra in Indonesia, but with a lot of care and patience from dedicated Eden gardener Tim Grigg, they should grow into new Titan Arums that send up more of those massive flower spikes – in about six to eight years’ time!

By Maureen Newton

If you can’t wait til then to see them, check out this video of the Corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) that bloomed in the Biome in June.

Perfect Christmas presents for 5 to 10 year olds

November 16, 2011
Author: admin

Take a look at our popular selection of Christmas presents for children aged between 5 and 10.  They’ve been handpicked by our own children for their originality and creativity, and are loved by us because they offer something for every budget.

Plus they keep small people busy well beyond Christmas Day.

Kids Den Kit
With its tarpaulin, groundsheet, mallet, tent pegs, tent peg bag, rope, metal mug, camouflage paint and webbing haversack , this kit provides the perfect place for young adventurers to enjoy the outdoors. Use it as a base camp, hide-out or the best of secret headquarters.

Recycled Tyre Swing
Brilliantly demonstrating how you can take something that would ordinarily be seen as rubbish and turn it into a great fun play thing that young kids love. Our recycled tyre swing kit is made by a group of ex-fishermen in Cornwall who are turning their hand to providing fabulous outdoor play equipment.

Jigsaw Puzzle Maker
This jigsaw puzzle maker helps kids to turn waste paper into their own jigsaw puzzle blocks. It’s a great toy to understand the whole recycling process. Just think, if kids set their mind to it over Christmas, they could create the world’s largest puzzle out of recycled paper.

Kid’s Worm Farm
Our kids worm farm is a prize-winning educational tool that helps children to understand the importance of recycling waste food using composting worms. Children feed the worm farm with food scrap and watch as it turns into soil, when a seed can then be planted. The pod’s self-watering system will grow it into a plant.

Insect Eating Plants
Kids love our regular Freaky Nature season at Eden, where our insect-eating plants play a starring role. That’s why we knew they’d like our new insect-eating seed kits, which mean kids can test the plants out in the comfort of their own homes. The famed Venus Flytrap, and the monster meat-eating pitcher all play a part, and if you can’t decide which scary plant to grow opt for the selection pack.

Stormy Seas Game
This clever game is fun for all the family as the crew try to balance the boat’s mixed up cargo on the rough Cornish sea. Well, it was Cornish when we played! Lots of fine balancing and concentration are needed or your valuable cargo may be lost.

Kid’s Wooden Deckchair
Made from solid beech, our kids wooden deckchairs are perfectly sized for little ones. Being just the right size means they won’t struggle to get out and can carry it themselves to the beach or round the garden.

We’ve got lots more Christmas gift guides including presents for under-5s, teenagers, keen gardeners and foodies.

Top Christmas presents for teenagers

November 16, 2011
Author: admin

Notoriously hard to buy for, teenagers can be very picky, so finding a present that has the added meaning of helping an educational charity like the Eden Project is sure to win you brownie points.

Below, our ideas for Christmas presents for teenagers should make your life a little easier:

Eden Project organic hoody
Our snuggly hoodies are made out of thick super-soft organic cotton so they’ll keep you warm as toast on a cold winter’s day. They’ve got a front pouch for keeping those fingers warm too. Our Eden Project hoodies come in navy and dark green so will go with absolutely anything.

Soap Gift Bag
Our luxury soap gift bags are packed with soaps created especially for the Eden Project by the Trevarno Estate in Helston, Cornwall. The soaps are wondeful to smell and feel great on the skin. The gift set includes a selection of different soaps that harness the properties of avocado, tea tree, cedarwood, orange and calendula.

Grow Your Own Truffle Tree
Budding young gardeners or foodies with an entrepreneurial streak will love this tree. A fine oak, it’s been impregnated with truffle spores so in just a few years your lovely teenager will be able to harvest their own truffles. They might even start trying to sell them back to you!

Eden Project Handmade Journal
Made by hand from Lokta paper in Nepal, these colourful journals are environmentally-friendly and contribute to the economic development of the people who make them. The art of this kind of papermaking goes back over a thousand years. It could be the inspiration your favourite teenager needs to knuckle down to a spot of art themselves.

Recycled Surf Clock
If your teenage son or daughter loves the surf, this tide clock is perfect. Cleverly made out of old vending machine cups – yes, really – the quartz-driven clock tracks the state of the tide. Just think, it could be exactly what they need to help them to get up on time.

Bunch of Mugs
When their friends drop by for a coffee, your favourite teenager will find this bunch of mugs very handy. Their wondeful, inspired design means that carrying three mugs at once is child’s play with no risk of spills. You never know, they may even make you a cuppa.

Milk Chocolate Buttons
A big jar brimming with delicious, organic chocolate buttons made using Dominican cocoa and rich, creamy milk. There are so many in the jar that we’re sure they’ll be shared out and another benefit is that once they’ve gone, your son or daughter will have a handy jar for stashing all their stuff.

We’ve got lots more Christmas gift guides including presents for under-5s, teenagers, keen gardeners and foodies.

Top Christmas presents for kids under-5

November 16, 2011
Author: admin

Sometimes buying presents for younger children can be tricky, especially if you want to give a gift that lasts a long time. Here we’ve selected the favourites from ‘road-tests’ with our own young children to give you a helping hand.

Cuddly Bamboo Teddy Dog
A cuddly bear with embroidered eyes and a cloth nose that’s made from bamboo!  Yes, that’s right, the fabric it’s made from is derived from bamboo and it’s filled with recycled materials. So not only is this lovely bear super soft and cuddly but also environmentally sound. We love them and think they make the perfect first bear.

Kids Musical Instruments
Our new collection of fairly-traded musical instruments come from around the world. They give everyone the chance to make music and, for young children especially, experience the joy of making new sounds without breaking the bank.

Bamboo Train Set
This wonderful first kids train set is the perfect Christmas present for little train lovers. Made from tough bamboo, the train set includes everything a mini trainspotter could wish for, including brightly-coloured carriages, some cute little trees and of course, the track itself.

Child’s Trike
Made sustainably from bamboo this beautifully designed, simple child’s trike comes in an easy to assemble kit.  With its bright red wheels sporty little racers will love it’s bright colours and learn about balance and co-ordination.

Off-road Racer
A tough little off-road car, with rugged wheels and an impressive wooden chassis made from bamboo. Painted with water-based paints this impressive little vehicle will keep young kids busy for hours and has withstood a good deal of ‘road-testing’ to date.

Bug Catcher
Young children loved having fun running around catching butterflies, moths and other flying insects with this long-handled net. Although not always easy to catch anything it was a great way to study insects when we did and we also had lots of laughs running around.

We’ve got lots more Christmas gift guides including presents for children of all ages, gardeners and foodies.

Great gifts for children over 10

November 16, 2011
Author: admin

This selection of great gifts for children over-10 have been tested by a lovely group of children and grandchildren at Eden. We hope your recipients love them as much as ours did.

Smite Outdoor Game
Imagine boule crossed with croquet and you’re nearly there. This portable game is a great way to get the kids out and about in the Winter. It requires skill, dexterity and cunning. Something we found our 10-year-olds had in abundance.

Power-plus Chameleon
The Chameleon can be transformed into six different solar-powered models that spring into action at the sign of sun. Fun to maker this is a great way to learn about the power of the sun and solar energy. And, the best bit – no batteries required.

Flower-making Kit
All our Makedo kits are fun but this one was particularly popular during testing. The kit has everything you need to create your own potted flower using items usually thrown away like empty yoghurt pots, plastic bottles and loo rolls. The kit provides a range of clever tools including a safe-saw, hinges, pins, clips and colourful stickers.

Go-green Board Game
Self-sufficiency can be hard work but this new green living board game made it a lot of fun as we grew our crops, fattened up our livestock and went to market to sell the fruits of our labour. We all enjoyed it as we added new allotments and built up our hay stacks. Guaranteed to keep the family occupied over the Christmas holiday and beyond.

Potato Clock
Build your own digital clock using the power of the potato. Yes, really. The potato clock kit harnesses the power of the potato and is brilliant educational Christmas present for kids with enquiring minds. Plus, once they’ve tested out potatoes they can experiment to find out what other substances will power the clock.

Gold Mining Science Kit
Eden was built in the site of an old mine so we were keen to test out the gold mining kit. It requires some patience but after some time digging for gold in the table-top mine we found some treasure in the form of small nuggets of pyrite. Our mini gold-diggers loved this!

We’ve got lots more Christmas gift guides including presents for children of all ages, gardeners and foodies.
