£25,000 to £28,000 per annum
Overview
To work closely and provide the link that co-ordinates the Horticultural Strategic Management Team steer and directives into planned and programmed work packages that are delivered by the horticultural team. To undertake the day-to-day delivery of the prioritising, planning and programming of Outdoor Biome horticulture at the Eden Project. To support the Supervisor’s in their specific roles as well as actively build and maintain relationships across a diverse range of disciplines within Eden. To obtain high horticulture standards through quality control. To support the Chair of Horticulture in maintaining an overview of exhibits, provide input into the creative design and interpretation of exhibits.
Dimensions:
- Responsibility of 20 employees alongside the Chair of Horticulture
- Budget responsibility approximately £450,000
- Responsible for the outdoor gardens and natural habitats
- You will work closely with four Team Managers, (Nursery, Enclosed Biomes, Science and Landscape) to co-ordinate and deliver the management of the garden
- Through inspirational leadership, exceptional people management and technical abilities you will be instrumental in the development, planning and programming and delivery of our award winning garden
- You will support the Chair of Horticulture to obtain high horticultural standards through quality control of horticultural works
- You will work with talented people across the Eden Project team to fulfil our ambitions of inspiring all to become better stewards of our planet

Expectations for performance
- Project manage, plan, budget and programme for horticultural works as part of the Horticultural Strategic Management Team
- To be proactive on developing the annual planting plan, three to five year plan, business case, work programmes and the organisation structures for the Outdoor Biomes
- Attend designated meetings across site and act as a main point of contact with other Eden Project Teams for the Horticulture Delivery
- Continual monitoring to check on the delivery, meeting deadlines and ensuring that a high standard of quality is achieved by the horticulture team
- Work alongside other Horticulture Team Managers and utilise specialist help to ensure good Horticulture Procurement Practices (Economic, Environmental and Social)
- Oversee annual documentation, care and maintenance of Horticulture Assets
- Oversee effective administration of the Health and Safety/ Risk Assessment aspects of running the horticulture team effectively
- Horizon scanning and troubleshooting to identify current and future horticulture issues and seek solutions with both Horticultural Strategic Management Team and the Horticulture Team
- Act as horticulture advocate internally with other Eden Project Teams/Team members and externally, (e.g. media, talks, visitor engagement)
- Attend, contribute and lead meetings as and when required
- Work alongside other Horticulture Team Managers to coordinate the training of the horticultural team and to maximise the skills, abilities and knowledge to deliver Great Horticulture
- Work proactively on new developments
- Work with the wider Eden development team and Directors to support new projects and initiatives that have horticultural elements
Key skills that will help you
- Practical and theoretical horticulture, arboriculture and hard landscape construction
- Programming and planning workloads and work packages
- Quality assurance, auditing, documenting and IT
- Identifying core issues and problem solving
- Resource investigator with regards, people, skills, finances and budgets
- A good overview of UK and international horticulture, awareness of trends and issues
- A good awareness of existing and breaking horticultural technologies, including those that improve the environmental and social footprint of horticulture
- Experience of management of diverse project teams where permanent staff are supplemented with volunteer or other labour
- Willing to contribute to educational activities

Qualification that fit (essential)
- Demonstrable practical horticultural and/or plant science experience
- People management at a Supervisory level or above
- HND, Botanic Gardens Diploma, Relevant B.Sc., or equivalent
- Experienced in project management, including programming and planning of work packages
Qualifications that fit (desirable)
- A MHort, M.Sc, M.Phil., PhD or equivalent would be advantageous
