Post-Mining Alliance
The Post Mining Alliance is an independent not-for-profit organisation with a mission to encourage and promote the regeneration of mine sites for the sustainable benefit of the local community and natural environment.
The Alliance's aims are:
- to catalyse action on mining legacies
- to stimulate the uptake of good practice in integrated mine closure
- to encourage solutions where risks, responsibilities and opportunities are shared.
This will be achieved by:
- working with partners to advance site-specific solutions
- developing demonstration models and case studies of good practice from around the world
- facilitiating and convening events that develop successful aproaches to post mining regeneration
- networking with regional centres of excellence
- education and public engagement through our activites at the Eden Project
A mining operation has enormous potential to contribute to the sustainable development of a region. The real challenge comes when the mine closes and the local community is faced with potentially large environmental liabilities and possible socio-economic collapse.
Until recently mine decommissioning and closure activities were not obligatory in most countries. Centuries of inadequate and non-existent mine closure practice have left a huge legacy of derelict mine sites and often impoverished communities. This legacy affects the reputation of the entire mining industry arguaably stifling debate and progress on other aspects of its environmental and social performance.
