Hemp
Few plants have been such constant companions to so many civilizations as hemp. And few plants have produced two such radically different products. The seed can be used as a food protein and the outer stem provides fibre for ropes and canvas for tents.
Hemp at Eden
The fibre crop today is mostly grown to supply the specialist paper industry. The outlook for hemp is bright. Like flax it provides a good break crop for farmers, giving the land a rest from other crops and helping to prevent disease.
Unlike flax it does not require a high level of fertilizer or any agro-chemicals. It is naturally resilient to most pests and diseases and tolerates most soil types.
