School Workshop: The Business of Eden

Workshop overview

What happens: The Eden Project is a unique organisation; social enterprise, educational charity, tourism destination, exemplar of regeneration. This session sets Eden in the Cornish context and explores the project’s focus on sustainability, introducing the concept of the Triple Bottom Line and our function as a social enterprise. The session provides practical examples and real world contexts to ground your students’ learning. Within this overview we can explore an aspect of Eden’s work in more detail looking at one of:

customer service
how we work with our suppliers
developing and retaining a successful workforce
social and ethical aspects of business
business communication - Eden case studies
understanding retail at Eden

This classroom-based session links strongly with Business and Travel & Tourism A level syllabuses. We encourage the students to ask questions and build a running dialogue with us throughout the interactive session.

Practical information

This workshop enables students to:

investigate the Eden Project as an example of a social enterprise
consider social, environmental and ethical factors in business
gather practical examples of current practice in workforce development or customer service or working with suppliers

We've designed the workshop to complement the following syllabuses:

AQA Business Unit 4: Assessing Changes in the Business Environment
OCR Applied Tourism AS Unit G721: Customer service in travel and tourism
OCR Applied Business AS Unit F243: The impact of customer service

It also offers content aimed extending students thinking beyond the specifications.

The workshop costs £7.95 per pupil, with a minimum charge of £159 per group (includes VAT). Group size is flexible. The cost includes:

a facilitated workshop with our Education Team
free access to the Eden site for the day
all equipment needed for the workshop
free teaching resources enabling your class to prepare for the workshop and to follow up on the activity (download a sample copy)
a personal welcome from the Education Team at the entrance
a base for your bags in our purpose-built education centre, The Core
a space to eat your own lunch

The price includes free entry for accompanying adult helpers (please note our suggested adult/pupil ratios are as follows: Early Years Foundation Stage, 1:3; Key Stage 1, 1:6; Key Stage 2 and 3, 1:10; Key Stage 4, 1:15; Key Stage 5, 1:20). Additional adults are charged at our group booking rate.

We also offer a free preparatory visit to Eden for teachers wanting to plan their school trip, which should be booked in advance.
