'Eco-sinner' Fred Pearce to give talk at Eden
Internationally-renowned environmental writer Fred Pearce will be giving a talk at the Eden Project on May 7.
The event follows in the footsteps of Fred’s latest acclaimed book, Confessions of an Eco-Sinner, in which he questions a number of accepted truths about the environment.
In writing the book, Fred travelled in search of the source of the cotton in his shirt, the prawns in his curry and the people who grew, mined or made all his stuff.
On his travels, he found squalor and despair, but also good things in surprising places and huge opportunities just waiting to be seized. Fred's trip left him challenging a range of green assumptions, moving his thinking on to a new, more sophisticated plane.
Fred said: "In a world of globalization, the people and the pollution that sustain our lifestyles are mostly invisible to us. I wanted to find out more about that hidden world, about my global footprint.
“I went round the world to find where the cotton in my shirt, the coffee in my mug, the gold in my ring, the computer on my desk, and much else come from - and what happens to my stuff after I've finished with it."
Fred is a former news editor at New Scientist magazine, and is currently its environment and development consultant.
He also writes regularly for the Independent and the Times Higher Education Supplement, the Boston Globe and Foreign Policy in the US and has written reports and extended journalism for WWF, the UN Environment Programme, the Red Cross, UNESCO, the World Bank and the UK Environment Agency.
He is syndicated in Japan, Australia and elsewhere and has filed articles from more than 50 countries in the past decade.
He was voted BEMA Environment Journalist of the Year in 2001 and has been short-listed for the same award in 2000, 2002 and 2003. He is a past recipient of the Peter Kent Conservation Book Award and the TES Junior Information Book Award.
Confessions of an Eco-Sinner is published by Eden Project Books. Fred’s previous books include Last Generation - How Nature Will Take Her Revenge for Climate Change, When the Rivers Run Dry: What Happens When Our Water Runs Out? and Deep Jungle: Journey to the Heart of the Rainforest.
Fred’s talk will be introduced by Eden Chief Executive Tim Smit and the event will take place in the project’s Core building. Admission is free and it takes place at 6pm on May 7. To book, call Teresa Stepping tstepping@edenproject.com 01726 818871.
