Developing your school grounds for learning and play

Aim
To give participants the knowledge and confidence to initiate a process to develop their school grounds.
Who's it for? Teachers and school leaders interested in improving their schools' outdoor spaces to increase opportunities for play and learning. The focus will be on KS1 and 2 but there will be much of use for early years practitioners and secondary teachers.
Outcomes
Participants will:
- Consider and reflect on what they want from their school grounds and the opportunities they present – not just PE and nature study…
- Explore ways of involving the whole school community in developing their school grounds
- Look at case studies and good practice from schools and on the ground at Eden
- Consider practicalities – briefing, design and designers, construction, maintenance, resources, finance.
Growing an edible school garden

Aim
To give participants the knowledge and skills to take on a practical food growing project in school.
Who's it for? Teachers, teaching assistants, school leaders interested in improving their own gardening skills and knowledge to enable them to work with young people on school gardening projects.
Outcomes
Participants will:
- Consider opportunities presented by school food gardening for learning across the curriculum and whole-school community involvement.
- Be familiar with basic techniques for growing a variety of fruit and vegetables suitable for school grounds.
- Feel confident to work with their young people to plan, develop and maintain a school food-growing plot.
- Look at case studies and good practice from schools and on the ground at Eden
- Consider practicalities – maintenance, resources, health and safety, finance.

Aim
To explore how and why the outdoor classroom can be used to deliver and enhance learning for primary pupils.
Who's it for? Primary teachers keen to make the most of outdoor green spaces close to their school.
Outcomes
Participants will:
- Be aware of the national context and justification for Learning Outside the Classroom and the benefits of learning outdoors.
- Gather ideas for planning and try out activities for delivering outdoor learning linked to the curriculum in school grounds and local outdoor spaces - including practicalities and risk awareness.
- Develop knowledge of agencies and resources for school grounds development and outdoor learning.
- Action plan to take forward outdoor learning with their class.
