Paolo - a fan of the simple things

We love going round to our parents’ place for our tea, and so it seems does our fifth Sessions headliner Paolo Nutini.

In his new album Sunny Side Up, we’ve found some fantastic advice to help you cope with the dismal days before our summer Sessions start, all in a song inspired by Paolo Nutini’s dad.

His songs contain an infectious mixture of up-beat swing and down-to-earth lyrics, often complete with an unusual backstory. His debut album These Streets, was inspired by breaking up with his teenage sweetheart, even though he met up with her again during the recording of the album and they have been together ever since!

In Sunny Side Up, however, Paolo felt that he had more freedom to take a different approach, which lead him to be really honest with himself and to create an album with a more positive feel.

Our favourite tune is Simple Things, which describes his dad’s 41 years, day in, day out, working at the same chip shop and the pleasure he gets in coming home to his family every evening.

We reckon that there’s something to be said for finding happiness in the simple things in life and so does Paolo: “My father is a wealthy, self made man/But his wealth does not consist of riches or acres of land/Instead he has a family who are/His biggest fans/That’s something that I one day hope to have/So I’ll cherish the simple things.”

Feeling happier? Why don’t you spread the joy around and share the things that mean the most to you. We’ll leave you with one last thought from Simple Things: “If you love the life you live/Then you’ll get a lot more done/Be more inclined to take the reins/Than turn away and run.”
