Razorlight and The Maccabees
So to the second episode of the 2009 Eden Sessions. Following the rock odyssey that was Kasabian, Thursday July 9 was time to pull on the skinny jeans, don the retro sunglasses and check out two of the UK's hottest indie bands.
Earlier in the evening, The Maccabees joined the ranks of some of the finest Sessions supports - Hot Chip, Vampire Weekend - with a set that saw them travel from sensitive indie-pop to overdriven angsty rock and back again. The crowd was one of the biggest and most excitable your correspondant has seen for a support act. The stage was set for Razorlight's Eden debut.
Sporting ever-present Wayfarers, Johnny Borrell proved that whatever anyone thinks of him, he's one of the most charismatic frontmen around at the moment. His vocals were spot-on and the rest of the band demonstrated not only their fine musicianship (held together fantastically by new drummer Skully) but also their understanding of live music. The mood of the set ebbed and flowed brilliantly and Razorlight showed that they're in tune with a crowd like few others.
With all the crowd-pleasers ticked off - America, Wire to Wire, Golden Touch - Johnny and co. launched into a four song encore that culminated in an elongated version of Somewhere Else accompanied by a majestic laser show. At that point, one felt, "somewhere else" was the last place the crowd wanted to be.
