Butterfly Food

This butterfly food may be used with a butterfly feeder or to attract butterflies to a feeding area in your garden or on your patio.

It is also suitable for moths and contains a blend of food including essential vitamins they need.

Butterflies are the most beautiful and delicate of garden insects. They all have very different life spans, and habitat requirements vary. By encouraging them into your garden you can keep records of which varieties you see and how long they stay for.

TOP TIPS

  • Place the food in a Butterfly Box, or feeding area or other chosen site which should be warm and sheltered near appropriate host plants.
    • Only use a little at a time to make it last longer.
    • Host plants: Buddleia, Nettles, Asters, Sunflower, Violets and Snapdragons. Proximity to wet area/pond is an advantage also.
    • Use the attractant from early Spring onwards. The attractant will last up to three months (dependent/variable with weather conditions).
    • Butterfly Facts

      1. Butterflies are important economically as one of the major agents of pollination
      2. It is a popular belief that butterflies have very short life spans. However, butterflies in their adult stage can live from a week to nearly a year depending on the species.
      3. Butterflies will use the house for roosting. The following may also use the house for hibernating: Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock (often found in sheds and outbuildings) and the Comma Butterfly. Less commonly, the Silver Winged Fritillary may use the box to lay eggs (preferably sited in mature trees) The chrysalis could be formed on the roof or internal branches.
      4. Butterflies are termed as holometabolous insects, and go through complete metamorphosis:
      • Egg
      • Larva, known as a caterpillar
      • Pupa (chrysalis)
      • Adult butterfly (imago)

How this gift helps

The Eden Project is an educational charity and social enterprise and when you buy anything from our shop, you're supporting our work and educational programmes.

As well as offering our visitors to Eden a memorable, educational day out, we also use our expertise to work with local organisations across the world.

In Thailand, we have been working with local organisation FORRU on reforestation projects to restore large areas of degraded tropical forest. Over 65,000 trees have been planted and community training and learning has been shared across the country building up a network of local knowledge on how to protect rainforests and conserve natural resources..
