Getting Outdoors

The Eden Project is all about celebrating what nature gives to us while learning how and why we need to look after it.

So naturally we were concerned by recent findings that children are spending less and less time outside. Not only are they missing out on a whole world of fun, adventure and really cool games (hide and seek anyone?) but there are some serious knock-on effects including health problems, poor social development and little understanding or interest in the environment - especially worrying in the face of climate change.

That's why Eden has launched a programme to combat the increasing alienation of children from their environment. We call it Mud Between Your Toes because its aim is to reconnect children with the outside world - and that means learning to love the mud.

Why we love Hemp

Hemp is a plant with the potential to provide valuable ecological solutions to help our civilization transform its economy to a more natural one.

Hemp is biodegradable and natural, it will not become part of the rubbish that is filling our landfills or polluting our world.

Hemp is the most environmentally positive crop, improving soil quality as it grows. It requires no herbicides and is naturally resistant to insects, fungus, and other pests. Hemp grows rapidly during its vegetative period, becoming tall and thick. It suppresses weeds, and shades and mulches the ground, which its deep taproots break up and aerate. These attributes promote healthy microbial soil life and leave the earth in a condition where it is easily worked and able to retain moisture during the next growing season.

Facts

The supplier: Ecolution in Romania

The following information has been provided by ECOLUTION®

ECOLUTION® has been an eco-focused hemp products manufacturer since 1990 in Transylvania, Romania, where we have developed our factory from the ground-up. Romania is an Eastern European democracy that have entered the European Union in 2007. Our production here is politically, socially, economically, and environmentally responsible. ECOLUTION® firmly believes in fair trade and has always dealt respectfully with our employees, ensuring that they have non-toxic, safe, well-heated, and well-lit working conditions -- and, of course, we do not employ children. Furthermore, our employees have opportunity for advancement, as their work is appreciated and rewarded. Because we officially employ our workers and pay all taxes for their labor, the Romanian government provides them with medical insurance and pension coverage. On the US side of our enterprise, we provide all full-time employees with health insurance.

ECOLUTION® is bringing respectful and progressive employment to Romania, and we are helping these people to develop an ancient resource, produced by them for millennia, into a competitive industry for the future. Originally we began with a couple of old sewing machines and worked with vintage fabric scraps to make a line of bags and hats. The creation of this embryonic factory was financed with money earned planting trees in California. From these roots, we have grown organically into the intricately interwoven and vertically integrated hemp factory of today. Our integration of production with market provides you an authentic and quality product fashioned in a socially, politically, and ecologically responsible manner. ECOLUTION® maintains its operations in harmony with tIhe preservation of our beautiful planet

When shopping can be good for the planet

We've taken care to source the greenest products to sell in our shop. That includes making sure that they're not overpackaged, or that they're made from recycled goods, so that they don't add to the waste mountain.

We also watch our waste at the Eden Project, recycling as much as we can, and even turning the food left overs from our cafes into soil through a giant composter!

Watch this video on how Eden 'does waste'.
