Natural rubber was originally derived from a latex which came from a milky substance that was produced from plants. Now natural rubber can be produced synthetically and is a flexible, waterproof and stretchy product with many uses.

Tablets of rubber or wax were originally used to remove lead/charcoal marks from paper prior to the invention of rubber erasers. To remove small errors written in ink on parchment or papyrus documents some cultures used sandstone or pumice. Crustless bread as also been used as an eraser in the past.
