The Eden Biomes

Images of Eden Project

What are the Biomes?

A biome is a climatically and geographically defined area of ecologically similar communities of plants, animals, and soil organisms, often referred to as ecosystems. Biomes are defined based on factors such as plant structures (such as trees, shrubs, and grasses), leaf types (such as broadleaf and needleleaf), plant spacing (forest, woodland, savanna), and climate.

the Humid tropics biome

Humid tropics

The Rainforest Biome houses plants from the Tropical Islands, Malaysia, West Africa and Tropical South America. This Biome (which could hold the Tower of London) is 50 metres high, 110 metres wide and 240 metres long.

There are plants and crops from tropical environments and rainforests, including bananas, coffee, balsa, mahogany, bromeliads (orchids), spices and tropical ferns. Each plant has its own story and the innovative signs and guides help visitors to enjoy those stories to the full.

the Warm temperate biome

Warm temperate

The "smaller" Mediterranean - 35 metres high and 140 metres long - showcases the cradle of civilisation around the Mediterranean (citrus, olives, herbs and vines), the rich variety of the South African regions (proteas and aloes), drifts of colourful Californian annuals (poppies and lupins) and shrubs of the Chapparal. There are also banks of fruits, vegetables and other crops.

the Outside biome

Outside

The roof of our outdoor biome is the sky!

This is our biggest Biome and as it’s our own climate it doesn’t need a roof.

This whole pit is one big exhibit showing regeneration is possible. In the great outdoors discover temperate crops that provide your foods, fuels, medicines and materials.
