The Eden Climate Fund

The Eden Climate Fund is part of the Eden Project's Climate Change programme.
What is the Eden Climate Fund?
The Eden Climate Fund invests in education initiatives, developed by the Eden Project, that are vital if we are to tackle climate change. Such programmes will include the promotion of the protection of the rainforests.
The fund also invests in projects that reduce carbon into the atmosphere.
Each £10 you donate to the fund will provide:
- £7.50 to save 1 tonne of carbon through on the ground energy and pollution control projects
- A minimum of £1.50 to be dedicated to education projects
- A maximum of £1 to cover administration costs
What's different about the Eden Climate Fund?
The Eden Climate Fund has features in common with carbon offset packages, but there are some crucial differences. These differences address what we see as a key problem with offsetting – why limit your commitment to reducing carbon emissions to the size of your personal carbon footprint?
To reduce the threat of climate change, as well as making those changes in our lives to reduce our own carbon footprint, we also need to work on wider issues – education, how energy is generated, how it’s distributed and used, and how to help developing countries acquire the technology needed for green growth for just a start.
Take one issue for example: tropical rainforests. They are the largest land-based absorbers of carbon and their destruction accounts for about 20% of all carbon emissions, the equivalent of the world’s entire transport system.
Money from the Eden Climate Fund will contribute to the promotion of the need to protect these precious rainforests.
How much should I donate?
‘Tonnes’ of a gas is a difficult concept to work with, but to give some sense of scale, about one tonne of carbon dioxide is emitted:
- on a one way flight from London to Mumbai1
- by driving an average car around 1900 miles
- running your computer for 15 months
- by the average Indian citizen in a year
- by the average UK citizen every six weeks
If you choose to Gift Aid your donation 100% of your payment will be used for projects, we will then use Gift Aid to cover our administration costs.
Where exactly does the money go?
The projects the fund supports will reduce carbon emissions by investing in energy efficiency, enabling a switch from high to low carbon technologies, and reducing pollutants that contribute to global warming. The fund especially favours projects that give multiple benefits, such as reducing poverty and improving health as well as reducing carbon emissions.
At the moment our carbon reduction projects are based overseas in developing countries as these countries find it hardest to invest in their own changes. Therefore any money invested is clearly achieving new things and it's possible to achieve more change for a given investment.
The fund also supports Eden's programme of work on climate change in the UK, which ranges from educational projects with schools, the exploration of new technologies for a low carbon world, conferences, and public events such as the Sexy Green Car Show.
