The Post Mining Alliance
The Post Mining Alliance is an independent not-for-profit organisation. It's mission is to encourage and promote the regeneration of mine sites. This will have a sustainable benefit for the local community and natural environment.
The Alliance's aims are:
- To facilitate action on mining legacies.
- To stimulate the uptake of good practice in integrated mine closure.
- To find solutions which share both risks and opportunities.
This will be achieved by:
- Working with partners to advance site-specific solutions.
- Developing case studies of good practice from around the world.
- Running events that develop successful approaches to post mining activities.
- Networking with regional centres of excellence.
- Public awareness and education through our activities at the Eden Project.
A mining operation has enormous potential to contribute to the sustainable development of a region. The real challenge comes when the mine closes. The local community can be faced with potentially large environmental liabilities and possible and economic collapse.
Until recently mine decommissioning activities were not a requirement in most countries. Centuries of poor mine closure practice have left a huge legacy of derelict mine sites and often financially ruined communities. This legacy affects the reputation of the entire mining industry.
The Post-Mining Alliance is hosting a one day workshop in Johannesburg on 14th October that will address the socioeconomic implications of closure. Click here for more details.
