Field of Light installation

Bruce Munro
November 1 until Spring 2009

This winter visitors to Eden will have a chance to see Bruce Munro’s magical Field of Light installation.

Best time to see it? Only visible in the dark so the best time to see the magical Field of Light is on our late night opening evenings throughout winter.

Bruce Munro art installationInspired by a trip through the Australian desert with it’s mysterious rhythms and blooms, the Field of Light is a fibre optic illuminated sculpture which is best seen in the dark.

The installation will have 6,000 stems and cover an area of 60 x 20 metres, using 24, 000 metres of fibre.

"Light has always played a major part in my life and work” says Bruce Munro, “For me, it is a natural medium to use. Deserts have many incongruities, they are infertile barren places until it rains, and then they bloom like a veritable Eden.”

Bruce Munro’s Field of Light installation seems to grow and sprout like a living thing. It first came to public attention in 2004, when a scaled down version was shown at the V&A in London. “The idea was originally conceived fifteen years ago during a trip through central Australia. The red desert had an incredible energy; ideas seemed to radiate from it along with the heat. The Field of Light installation was one idea that landed in my sketch book and kept on nagging at me…it just had to be done.” Over the years the design format and technology have evolved and the Field of Light has been sown in different fields.

"I wanted to create a field of light stems, that like the dormant seed in a dry desert would quietly wait until darkness falls, and then under a blazing blanket of southern stars bloom with gentle rhythms of light. Ones attention is thus drawn to the nature that surrounds the installation as well as the Field Of Light itself.” During winter months when darkness falls earlier, visitors have more time to appreciate the spectacular beauty of Munro’s installation.
