All about Jelly Jazz
Jelly Jazz have been running club nights and concerts in the south west of England for 15 years. Their musical mission is to set dancefloors alight with all things funky. A typical excursion may take in soul, funk, jazz, latin, brazilian, Afro-funk, hip hop, funky breaks from DJs and live bands.
Pete Isaac
Jelly Jazz promoter & resident DJ
Pete Isaac has been DJing for 19 years, with 14 of those being as promoter and resident of Jelly Jazz. After 5 years spinning acid house in the clubbing boom in the late 80's, he returned to his first love of jazz, funk and soul and set up Jelly Jazz in Plymouth, UK. At the time it was the ONLY place in the city people could hear the sounds of Galliano and Mother Earth mixed up with old funk and soul, early Hip Hop, jazz fusion, soul jazz and Latin. The club became an overnight success and it's reputation in the South West of England is almost legendary. The club also enabled Pete to use his graphic talents and produce all the advertising, club visuals and web site. He now has many years experience running club events and live concerts around the SW and beyond at Festivals and venues. Pete has also dabbled in music production when he's had the time, producing a remix for Dyanamo Productions and creating some of his own exclusives tracks and edits for personal DJ use.
Griff - Jelly Jazz Resident DJ
Starting to collect jazz dance music and funk whilst a student in Plymouth Griff missed the London jazz dance scene and started stubbornly putting on nights in the student union, to the bemused bafflement of most students. Finally through the Ents officer at the SU he was told about a guy who had just started a funk and jazz night in Plymouth and took his records down in the second week. The following week they decided they needed a name for the night and in a very one-sided brainstorming session, Pete decided to call the night Jelly Jazz. It soon became apparent that Pete and Griff would not only get on well, but would compliment each other musically. At first Pete took care of the beats and Griff played more of the older funk, jazz, latin and brazilian, but before long they were stomping all over each other's musical territory. Perhaps more importantly they would be childishly competitive over vinyl, and this would drive them to constantly seek out the slamming groove that the other didn't have. Every successful club night should have competitive residents!
