Plant Care - one day practical course

Eden has teamed up with the University of Edinburgh to offer a series of one day practical gardening courses
Whether you would like to work towards a career in horticulture or are a keen amateur, these courses are open to anyone who wants to learn some basic horticulture skills and meet like-minded people.
What you'll learn
• Definitions of plant growth and plant development and understanding growing limitations and factors for both
• Irrigation approaches, equipment and systems and terminology
• Types and use of fertilizers (including calculation of application rates)
• The use of protected cultivation techniques to manipulate the growing environment for optimal growth (including spacing and mulching)
• Appropriate storage, use and maintenance of equipment and materials
• Importance of regular plant monitoring and evaluation to assess care needs
• Different mulching materials, their availability, advantages and use
Key Practical Activities:
• Carry out the identification of nutrient requirements for plants; Selection of appropriate fertilizer; calculation of quantity required; and correct application. This should be for at least one of the following: liquid feed, broadcast, or incorporation into growing media
• Carry out the irrigation of a batch of plants using a watering can or hosepipe
• Examine (and set up if possible) a range of irrigation equipment
• Examine a range of protected cultivation environments
• Gain an understanding of the principles, practices, tools, materials and equipment used in the day to day care of plants
• Carry out a range of plant care operations using the appropriate materials
