Build a beautiful roundhouse

This spring, we’re building a beautiful, eco-friendly roundhouse in our wild outer estate, at Little Carne Farm, a part of Eden rarely shown to visitors, which is home to our weekly Little Eden outdoor play club for parents and under-fives.

The site already has compost toilets, a fire pit and a mud kitchen, but the key to unlocking the site is the roundhouse, an undercover base, somewhere that allows us to offer a wider range of activities that will be less dependent on the weather.

What you’ll learn

This fascinating process involves many stages including making a wooden structure, creating a living roof, making an earth floor, and decorating the beautiful space.

Working with a master builder, who has years of experience building roundhouses, you’ll have the opportunity to learn different techniques, including framing, carpentry and turf roofing.

Who can get involved

We believe that the community construction process is as important as the finished building, which is why we’re inviting volunteers to support the build. Essentially, we’re welcoming over-18s of all abilities – and if you have practical and woodworking skills to offer, so much the better.

How to take part

The project will run Monday to Friday (during working hours) between 16 and 20 April, and 30 April and 4 May. We’d like individuals to offer a minimum of half a day, so that we have time to train and brief you – and ideally there will be a core group of you who are able to help throughout the whole build.

To let us know that you’d like to be involved, please fill in the form below before Wednesday 4 April. We’re already busy putting together a team and a schedule, and we’ll be in touch to let you know as soon as we can if we’ll be able to take you up on your kind offer of help.
