Volunteering opportunities with grandparents and kids
- Wednesdays – Fridays 10am-3pm
- Opportunities for those 50+ years
- Creative volunteering working with children
We’re looking for volunteers aged 50 and over to help with our creative engagement and play opportunities designed for grandparents and their grandchildren.
Do you enjoy spending time with different generations, being creative – indoors and out – and helping people learn new things? Then you might be interested in helping us facilitate our play sessions designed especially for grandparents who regularly look after their young grandchildren.
‘It's rewarding to help make a positive difference for the grandparents and children while enjoying the opportunity to meet others.’
Vanetta, Deep Roots New Shoots volunteer
About the programme
Deep Roots New Shoots is a pioneering new project to support grandparents who regularly look after their grandchildren aged five and under. With funding from Nesta and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, the project aims to mobilise the time and talents of older people, bringing people together to help each other.
The sessions provide ideas to support children’s early years development, and give grandparents and their grandchildren an opportunity to meet and interact with others.
What we’re looking for
Eden is looking for volunteers aged 50 and over to help support our storytelling, creative activities, outdoor play, walking trails and much more.
Ideally we would like you to commit to a morning or an afternoon session each week, but we can be flexible. A fortnightly or monthly commitment could also be accommodated, and we would love to hear from you about different ways you could bring your skills to the project.
'I enjoy working with young children, being helpful and encouraging creative play. I've had a friendly welcome from everyone.'
Lesley, Deep Roots New Shoots volunteer
What you’ll get out of the sessions
You’ll meet new people, help them connect to the Eden Project and each other, and share your knowledge and skills as a dedicated member of our team.
You do not require any specific training or qualifications, but if you've worked with young children, perhaps in teaching or an educational setting, you would have the necessary skills to engage, support and inspire. As a parent or grandparent yourself, you would also have knowledge and expertise to share. You’ll be given the training you need to run activities and keep people safe on site.
‘It’s a joy to be involved in encouraging grandparents and their charges to look at the environment and its wonders.’
Pat Barnes, Deep Roots New Shoots volunteer
