Alumni profile: Richard Riddell
Richard Riddell graduated from our HND Garden & Landscape Design in 2016 and went on to set up his own garden and landscape design practice.
What course did you study, and what attracted you to that course in the first place?
I studied the HND Garden & Landscape Design (part time). When looking into retraining as a garden designer a few people recommended Cornwall College, so I got in touch and received really helpful advice on which course to take at Eden.
How did you feel the course prepared you for your career ahead?
The course helped me with a good start to a new career, and also a network of good people to know. The design projects studied on the course can be transferred directly into real situations.
What was the best thing about the course?
I enjoyed all of it! From working on a small show garden in my first year to working on the finishing touches of the final design project, it was great to be in an inspirational place.
What have you gone on to do since graduating?
I entered my final project into the Society of Garden Design awards and was delighted to win the best student award. I now run my own design practice, working on a few projects locally and further afield. I also do some freelance design work for other designers.
Any advice for people considering entering the industry?
I volunteered my time to be part of a show garden build, then went on to have part time work in a garden design practice that coincided with studies. It helped massively to put new skills learnt at Eden straight into real projects.
