A student from Tywardreath School has won a competition of hundreds of local school children to design a logo for a race at the forthcoming Eden Project Marathon.

Jowan Sleep, who has since finished junior school and is now in year seven at Fowey School, will see his winning design on the t-shirts and badges that will be given to people taking part in the one mile Fun Run, a race that complements Eden’s Marathon and Half-Marathon on October 11.

The three runners-up in the competition were Tabitha Webb from St. Winnow CE School, Joe Wilkins from St. Wenn School and Francesca Jeffery from Biscovey Junior School.

Students at schools from around the St. Austell area were invited to enter the competition and designs were also received from children at St. Columb Major CP School, Mount Charles School and Carclaze Community Junior School.

Tracey Smith, Commercial Relationship Manager, said: “The Eden Marathon is a great community event so we’re glad that local schools have got involved in such a big way. The standard of entries to the competition was really high and we think Jowan’s logo is going to look fantastic on the t-shirts and badges come race day.”

The Fun Run will give people the chance to run a mile through Eden’s three climates – Rainforest, Mediterranean and Cornish – and anyone who wants to take part can register until September 30.

Race entry costs £2, which includes admission to Eden. Everyone who finishes gets a goodie bag including the badge featuring Jowan’s design and all under-14 finishers will get a t-shirt, also featuring the logo.

The Eden Marathon and Half-Marathon races both start and finish at Eden’s home at Bodelva and take a winding route through some spectacular mining heritage areas and beautiful countryside landscapes. The races are being staged in association with St Austell Running Club.
