On Saturday August 20, the Eden Café in White River Place will be hosting a night of salsa dancing, spicy food and fancy dress, washed down with a splash of tequila, to raise money for a programme helping street children in Mexico.

Kara-Jane Schupfer, who has been volunteering at the Eden Project over the summer, will be travelling to Mexico in September to work with street children in the country’s capital, Mexico City.

Kara, who is from Germany, will be going to Mexico with the help of a German organisation called the International Youth Community Service, which sends volunteers to Asia, Africa and Latin America. The money raised from the charity night will help to cover the costs of the trip, such as basic accommodation and food during the 11 month placement.

In advance of her journey to Mexico, Kara has been volunteering in different roles at the Eden Project. As well as working on the access team and in the Eden Café, Kara has also been working with Eden’s Great Day Out programme, which offers inspirational trips to homeless people, offenders and excluded young people.

Kara feels that her experiences at Eden will be particularly relevant when she is in Mexico. She said: “Being able to work with the Great Day Out team has been great preparation for my work in Mexico City. It is really useful to see how Eden is working to help people that feel excluded from society and give them positive advice for the future. “

The charity night will take place from 8pm until midnight. Along with salsa lessons by Abanico Salsa and Latin beats from one of Eden’s home-grown DJs there will be party games, raffle and a selection of delicious Mexican food to keep the fiesta going all evening. People are also encouraged to dig out their best fancy dress outfits, with a prize for the outfit with the most flair.

Tickets cost £3 in advance or £4 on the door. People can also add a portion of tapas for an extra fee of £1.
