On Friday May 18, the Eden Café in St. Austell will be hosting a gig featuring three eclectic artists: talented songstress Joanna Chapman-Smith, eccentric violinist Jaron Freeman-Fox and guitarist Katie Marie.

Toronto-born musician Joanna Chapman-Smith digs deep into her Italian-American, New Zealand and Brazilian roots for inspiration. Mixed with urban Canadian influences, flavours of European jazz, flamenco, Balkan choral music and everything in between, her work covers a wide spectrum of emotions.

Joanna is a skilled guitarist, pianist and clarinet player and often uses other unconventional instruments in her live shows, including many of her own creation. Her strong, crystal-clear vocals are truly distinctive and were the inspiration for her third album Love Me Deeply, when an illness reduced her voice to a whisper.

She will be supported by fellow Canadian Jaron Freeman-Fox. The violinist and composer fuses Celtic and bluegrass fiddle playing with his extensive study of Indian classical music and jazz to create a style that is beautiful and quirky.

Often playing with his band The Opposite of Everything, Jaron has performed in India, Brunei, Indonesia, Ireland, England and throughout Canada and the USA. He is currently writing an album with the group that is due to be released later in the year.

Joanna and Jaron will be joined by Totnes singer and songwriter Katie Marie. Armed with her guitar, Katie’s soulful, acoustic performances have earned her a local fan-base in the South West and further afield.

Ashley van Dyck, Eden Café Manager, said: “Having just joined the team at the Eden Café, it’s really exciting to welcome such a strong line-up of musicians.

“I’m looking forward to some jaw-dropping vocals, some eclectic instruments and plenty of delicious food.”

The gig takes place from 8pm until midnight and tickets cost £5, or £4 for concessions or tickets bought at the café beforehand.

A selection of locally sourced beverages will be on offer throughout the night. Bread, dips and a choice of seasonal hot food will be available until 9:30pm.
