Eden Project Directors Peter Stewart and Rita Broe have been honoured by Her Majesty The Queen for their work on The Big Lunch, which this year was part of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

In the just-announced Diamond Jubilee Honours List, Peter, who is Eden Project Campaigns and Communications Director, and Rita, who is Strategic Marketing Director, become  Members of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO).

With the pair leading the management team behind the event in June, The Big Jubilee Lunch attracted a record-breaking 8.5 million participants all around the UK and people in 70 countries across the globe who wanted to celebrate the Jubilee and build stronger communities.

Eden’s joint Chief Executive, Sir Tim Smit said: “This honour is a great accolade not just to Peter and Rita’s tireless leadership of a great campaign to inspire so many millions of people to join in June.  They would be the first to say it is also a fantastic tribute to the wider Big Lunch and Eden teams and all the local organisers who have pulled together brilliantly to help bring community and friendship to the UK and abroad through the Big Lunch over the last four years.  Congratulations to all - and here’s to next year.”

Peter Stewart worked as an advertising account director in London before returning to his native Cornwall, where he ran The Old Quay Inn at Devoran and was latterly the business manager for the plant nursery at Trewidden near Penzance.  He joined Eden nine years ago and his first role was to help more businesses work with the project.  Earlier this year he was appointed to the Board of Eden Project Ltd.

Rita Broe, originally from County Kildare, Ireland, is a former European Head of Marketing for MasterCard.  She joined the Eden Project in October 2011 as Strategic Marketing Director and is responsible for helping Eden to extend its national and international reach. Because she is of Irish nationality, Rita’s award is an honorary MVO.

The Big Jubilee Lunch was led by the Eden Project and made possible thanks to funders Big Lottery Fund and partners MasterCard, EDF Energy, Kingsmill and Asda.  Next year’s Big Lunch will take place on Sunday 2nd June 2013.
