Three senior members of the Eden Project, Sir Tim Smit, Peter Stewart and Rita Broe, received honours from The Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace yesterday (December 13).

Sir Tim received a Knighthood for services to public engagement with science while Peter and Rita became Members of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) for personal services for the Queen in relation to the Big Jubilee Lunch.

Richard Eyre, Chairman of Eden Project Limited, said: "We are very proud of these special people. They are characteristic of the energy, passion and sheer hard work of the many people who keep Eden wonderful."

Sir Tim, Chief Executive, Development and Co-founder of the Eden Project, worked for ten years in the music industry as composer/producer in both rock music and opera before moving to Cornwall to restore the Lost Gardens of Heligan. He remains a Director of the gardens to the present day.

In September 2011, he was awarded an Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE). Netherlands-born Sir Tim took UK citizenship in March this year which meant his honorary knighthood could become substantive and that he now can be addressed as Sir Tim Smit.

Peter Stewart, Eden’s Campaigns and Communications Director, and Rita Broe, Eden’s Strategic Marketing Director, were honoured for their work on The Big Lunch, which this year was part of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

With the pair leading the management team behind the event in June, The Big Jubilee Lunch attracted a record-breaking 8.5 million participants all around the UK and people in 70 countries across the globe who wanted to celebrate the Jubilee and build stronger communities.

Peter Stewart worked as an advertising account director in London before returning to his native Cornwall, where he ran The Old Quay Inn at Devoran.  He joined Eden nearly ten years ago and has worked to build corporate relationships with Eden as well as develop key campaigns. Earlier this year he was appointed to the Board of Eden Project Limited.

Rita Broe, originally from County Kildare, Ireland, is a former European Head of Marketing for MasterCard. She joined Eden in October 2011 as Strategic Marketing Director and is responsible for helping Eden to extend its national and international reach. Because she is of Irish nationality, Rita’s award is an honorary MVO.
