Riyah Snow of the Eden Project has been presented with the coveted Top Apprentice in Horticulture award at the recent Duchy College Prize Day.

The 21st annual award ceremony was held at Wesley Chapel, Camborne and the awards were presented by TV presenter, chef and sustainable living expert James Strawbridge.

While each apprentice who completed the course was presented with a certificate, Riyah was selected as the Top Apprentice in Horticulture out of all of the college’s horticulture apprentices, more than 85 in all.

During her time at Eden, 21 year-old Riyah has worked four days a week at the project and one day at the College’s Rosewarne campus. As well as gaining a year of experience working in one of the UK’s most high-profile gardens, she has also achieved a Work-Based Horticulture City & Guilds Diploma Level 2.

Riyah is from St. Agnes in Cornwall. After completing her GCSEs at Richard Lander School in Truro, she did a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design at Truro College. As a keen gardener, she decided to change direction and start studying with a view to a career in horticulture.

Don Murray, Head of Horticulture at Eden, said: “We are incredibly proud of Riyah’s achievements. She is a talented young horticulturist with a great flair and passion for plants and gardening. I look forward to seeing Riyah’s professional career flourish and I hope it inspires other young people to think about horticulture as a prospective career.”

Riyah said: “I’m delighted to have won this award. I knew I wanted to work in horticulture but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to specialise in. The Eden apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to work across lots of different areas – from tree-felling with the outer estates team to planting spring flowers and looking after tropical plants in the Biomes.

“The apprenticeship has worked out really well for me because it gives me vital job experience as well as a formal qualification.”

Riyah’s ambition is to continue her horticultural education, possibly with another work-based scheme.
