Explore the science of our planet – WOW! Weekend: Operation Earth, March 10-11
A fun family show and activities exploring Earth’s amazing science and stories await visitors at the Eden Project’s Wow Weekend: Operation Earth on March 10 and 11.
During the interactive performance there is a chance for members of the audience to become trainee environmental scientists when ‘Earthy’ – a mini version of the planet earth – takes a trip to the doctors.
With the help of Eden’s expert scientists and storytellers everyone can help investigate Earthy’s land, air and oceans to try and find solutions to Earthy’s problems.
Operation Earth is a two-year national programme to engage school-age children and their families with the latest science of the environment, exploring the work of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and how it relates to everyday life.
During the weekend there will be a host of hands-on activities including an insect pollination game, origami plant craft, a seed-planting workshop and a chance to explore the microscopic world of flowers and insects.
Experts from NERC’s Soil Security Programme will also be on hand to talk about the science of soil and run activities to discover its incredible properties.
Operation Earth is suitable for all but especially recommended for families with children aged six to 11.
Chris Bisson, Operation Earth programme manager for Eden, said: “We’re really excited to be hosting the first of our fun and fact-packed Wow Weekends celebrating the science of the environment as well as the scientists who research it.
“Operation Earth is an inspirational and exciting hands-on environmental science programme supported by NERC and everyone can get stuck in with the activities or sit back and enjoy a fun family show with important messages.”
The Operation Earth national programme is directed and project managed by The UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres, in collaboration with NERC, Eden, The Natural History Museum in London and Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh.
Wow Weekend: Operation Earth takes place on Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11, and all activities are included with admission.
