Eden work experience for budding students
•Degree students gain their work experience
•Specialist Horticulture & Plant Science degrees available through Eden Project Learning
A group of Horticulture degree students have been sowing the seeds of their success with hands-on experience at the Eden Project.
Since launching in September 2015, Eden Project Learning has quickly grown into one of the leading providers of higher education horticulture programmes in the U.K. with 75 students currently studying.
The group of university students, all currently studying the first year of their degree programmes in Horticulture and Plant Science through Eden Project Learning, have been undertaking three weeks of work experience alongside staff at the iconic Eden site near St Austell.
Working directly with Eden’s own teams of skilled horticulturists, the students have been involved in a wide range of tasks covering all areas of the site, including the Mediterranean and Rainforest Biomes, as well as Eden’s nearby Watering Lane nursery and their sister site; the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Eden Horticulturist Lucie Oldale worked in the Rainforest Biome with students who were involved with mulching, cutting back shrubs and herbaceous planting, clearing beds ready for replanting, planting new displays and clearing and rebuilding the nursery area.
The students also joined in on Eden’s winter 'clump' days, where the whole gardening team works together on big jobs like cutting back willow and dogwood outside.
“For us it has been really great working with the degree students, they’ve been so enthusiastic and interested in what we do and how the Biome works,” Lucie said.
“We have all been students before too so it is lovely to be able to pass on some of what we have learned to inspire others. We’ve got such a lot of work done too, the Biome is looking great thanks to all their hard work!”
The Horticulture degrees offered at Eden Project Learning are part of a group of specialist university-level programmes, awarded by Plymouth University and delivered in partnership with The Cornwall College Group. These include BSc (Hons) Horticulture with specialist pathways in Plant Science or Garden and Landscape Design, Foundation Degrees in Horticulture, Event Management and Renewable Energy Technologies, HNC/HNDs in Garden & Landscape Design and the Certificate in Education (including DET).
The unique appeal for students studying Horticulture that Eden provides means that students have the opportunity to study plants and ecosystems from around the globe, in one of the country’s greatest and most cutting-edge gardens.
Student George Beazley-Long is currently studying the first year of a Foundation degree in Horticulture with Eden Project Learning.
“The Horticulture course I’m studying at Eden is extraordinary and completely different from anything else,” George explained.
“The Eden Project is so special and unique and you can only really get this experience here and although I looked at other universities, none had the same appeal and fullness as the degrees at Eden. Everyone knows Eden, it’s worldwide and there are certain opportunities that only Eden can open up to you.”
George want to eventually work in a tropical nursery when he finishes his degree, preferably at Kew Gardens.
“This type of work experience has been really useful,” he explained.
“I’ve been enjoying working in the field as a balance to all the lab work that we do, it’s good to get a feel for what it’s like to actually work with the plants and care for them.”
Those students in the second year of studying their degree, ventured further afield to carry out their work experience at notable horticultural establishments across the U.K. These included Rothamsted Research, RHS Garden Rosemoor, Duchy College Microprop Centre, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, University of Oxford Botanic Garden & Arboretum, Chelsea Physic Garden and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
