Visitors to the Eden Project are being treated to an exciting display of top-class ice hockey on Saturday, December 15, courtesy of the South West’s premier team the Plymouth Pirates.

A group of eight players from the club are due to run demonstrations of their warm-up routine and practice drills. Visitors will be able to see first-hand the speed and skill of the sport.

These will take place on Eden’s ice rink at 11.40am, 12.40pm and 1.40pm in between regular skating sessions.

James Rew, Eden’s Ice Rink Project Manager, said: “Ice hockey is a brilliant spectacle but it’s not something we get to see very often in Cornwall so we’re very pleased to be welcoming the Plymouth Pirates to Eden to showcase their all-action skills on our ice rink.”

Steve Comber, who plays centre for the Plymouth Pirates and will be leading the demonstrations at Eden, said: "This is a great opportunity for people at Eden to see the brilliant sport of ice hockey up close. It’s great to watch and great fun to play, as well as being an excellent way of staying fit.”

Eden’s ice rink has returned for its 15th season and is open throughout the winter until February 24.

In addition to general skating sessions, there are also parent and toddler sessions for children up to the age of five to play on the ice without skates and relaxed family fun sessions with more room on the ice and free use of Eden's much-loved penguin and snowman skating aids.

For those who want to build their confidence on the ice, Eden is offering six-week courses of skating lessons for adults and children over the age of six starting on January 5 and 9.

The Plymouth Pirates have an adult team and youth team and train every Sunday at the Plymouth Pavilions. The adult team will be competing in the 2019 Southern Elite Cup, which takes place in January.

The Plymouth Pirates demonstrations are included in the standard Eden admission price.

General skating slots cost £7 for adults and £6 for children under 16. Family fun sessions are £6 for everyone and toddler ice play sessions cost £5 per child (which includes an accompanying adult). A six-week course of lessons costs £60 for an adult and £52 for a child.
