The shop at the Eden Project has a surprise bestseller this Christmas – a DIY vegan cheese-making kit.

The dairy-free kit is from award-winning gift food brand, The Big Cheese Making Kit, who already sell four of their cheese-making sets in the shop.

All the vegan recipes within the kit are nut based, using either cashews or macadamias. Other ingredients are all natural, such as agar made from seaweed and tapioca starch from the cassava plant, which can be found growing in the Rainforest Biome at Eden.

The new dairy-free kit has been a firm favourite since it appeared in the Eden shop and is currently out selling the dairy cheese-making kits that are also in store.

The set contains everything needed to make six varieties of fresh dairy-free cheese, including mozzarella, ricotta, mascarpone, halloumi, feta and parmesan. It includes enough ingredients to make 20 batches and has a shelf life of at least 12 months.

With easy step-by-step instructions, a range of herbs and delicious recipes, the kit is a popular alternative for vegans and people with dairy intolerance.

Amy Higgins, Eden’s Senior Retail Buyer, said: “We have been pleasantly surprised with how popular the vegan cheese-making kit has been this Christmas, even outselling the usual cheese-making kits that we also have in store.

“The move towards eating fewer animal-based products has increased the need to find alternatives that still taste good while looking after our planet, making this a fantastic ethical present for Christmas this year.”

The Eden Project offers a range of meat-free options in its various eating places, including The Core restaurant which has a predominantly vegan savoury menu, as well as vegan cakes and sweet treats.

With January just around the corner, Eden is making it easier for people to take part in Veganuary, which encourages a vegan diet for a month, with a pop-up café throughout each weekend. This will be serving stewpots and toasties, alongside vegan drinks such as hot chocolate, soya and oat milk-based teas, coffees and herbal lattes.

Other festive products that are flying off the shelves at Eden this Christmas include the Eco Starter Hamper, which includes numerous items such as a beeswax cloth sandwich wrap, a bamboo toothbrush and a rosemary shampoo bar, a sweet treats gift bag wrapped in an Eden festive jute bag and various Christmas hats made from 100% wool.

The Festival of Christmas is currently taking place at Eden, spreading plenty of festive cheer with a magical Santa experience, the project’s biggest-ever Christmas music programme, beautiful lighting, Luke Jerram’s breathtaking Gaia Earth installation and a Christmas jumper swap shop. The Festival finishes on December 30.
