Field Scabious

A lovely, pretty purple flower, the field scabious is a wildlife garden must.

The slender stems of the field scabious flower heads form a honey-comb-like shape and are an excellent source of nectar for both butterflies and bees. The pale purple flowers are covered in little rods, surrounded by tiny petals. It really makes a very attractive plant for your garden.

The field scabious (Knautia arvensis) can grow up to a metre in height, so makes a great addition to a taller boarder, or a perennial bed. It is the second source of food for the declining March Fritillary butterfly so is a very important plant for wildlife areas within the British Isles. As well as the March Fritillary, field scabious is also great for:

  • Small skipper
  • Essex skipper
  • Marbled white
  • Red admiral

Not only will you be providing nectar for the butterflies and bees that visit your garden, you should see increased beneficial insect visits to your garden overall.

Add these to your planting for a truly butterfly friendly garden!

There are approximately 40 seeds in the packet which are from cultivated stock. Please do not scatter any of the seeds into the countryside.

How your money is helping the planet

Eden is a charity, running transformational social and environmental projects. So when you buy something from the shop, you're helping to make a difference.

One of our major projects to help fight climate change is the planned geothermal power plant at Eden, which is to produce renewable heat and electricity from deep inside the Cornish granite – to heat our Biomes and feed power into the national grid.
