Top Tips

In Brazil, hammocks are still used as beds, as they always have been. This is the reason that they are as wide and comfortable as a bed!

These Brazilian hammocks are made of 100% cotton. We guarantee that the colours are AZO-free! TÜV – the symbol for your safety

The TÜV certificate is the German seal which certifies the safety of a product. The product is subjected to a range of standardised technical procedures, testing the product in its destined application area. This seal of safety is particularly important for applications which concern children.

Facts

Your hammock comes with detailed and clear instructions, explaining how to fasten/hang your hammock, here is an overview

Fair working conditions for high quality

The export of AMAZONAS hammocks today provides more than 100 workers with a secure job and fair wage. The majority of them is paid two to three times the minimum legal wage, which offers them and their families a steady income. In addition, they enjoy benefits which are largely unheard of in the rural areas of Brazil, such as social security, health insurance and paid holidays.

In this part of the world, people usually sway in their hammocks between two trees on a warm summer afternoon, simply as relaxation. Not so in South America, where many people traditionally sleep in their hammocks at night times, these have served as beds for generations.

Traditional hammock production in Brazil started running into trouble a few years ago, however, as increasing volumes of cheap foam mattresses from the Far East threatened to replace the hammock as the normal bed. Numerous manufactures were forced to close down and many jobs were lost in Ceara, the poorest region in Brazil.

One of these hammock factories, which had stood empty for years, is the birthplace of AMAZONAS. Together with a Brazilian, we bought the complex in 1996, renovated the buildings and purchased new weaving looms. The pace of growth was so fast that, in 2002, the old buildings were torn down and replaced by a new, state-of-the-art production hall. The modern hall has been equipped with additional looms and a new dust extraction system to ensure a dust-free working environment.

Exports to Europe provide further benefits for the workers. The quality of the raw materials we use corresponds to European standards. The environmental compatibility of the dyes used does not just help the rivers and streams in Brazil, but also means a healthy working environment for the workers who process the dyed cotton. Also, ear muffs for hearing protection are used practically nowhere else except in our factory.

In order to ensure the high quality of our products, we furthermore have our hammocks analysed at regular intervals for azo dyes, heavy metals, formaldehyde and other pollutants. So that you can relax with complete peace of mind!

How to use your hammock

Suspending:

Hammocks without spreader bars are hung so that they sag way down. The hanging loops of the hammocks are fastened at approx. head height and about 3 m apart.

Fastening

Hammocks are fastened using ropes (tree / beam) or hooks (wall or ceiling for hanging chairs). If trees or walls are further apart, the hammocks can be extended by ropes or chains. The suspension point then needs to be selected somewhat higher.

How to hang your hammock

The most important thing is to arrange the hammock's suspension loops at head height, and only some 3m distant from each other, thereby allowing the hammock to hang down in a deep arc. This then allows a diagonal lying position, like a real Brazilian ("from corner to corner"), and not straight. This keeps the back straight and is the secret of being able to lie comfortably and relaxed for hours on end in a hammock. As wobbly wooden cross-pieces are intentionally not used, one lies securely and without fear of falling out!

In Brazil, hammocks are still used as beds, as they always have been. This is the reason that they are as wide and comfortable as a bed! Even if you are only going to use your hammock for relaxation, you should still try to adopt the Brazilian way of lying: Contrary to European ideas, hammocks are not hung taut.

When shopping can be good for the planet

We've taken care to source the greenest products to sell in our shop. That includes making sure that they're not overpackaged, or that they're made from recycled goods, so that they don't add to the waste mountain.

We also watch our waste at the Eden Project, recycling as much as we can, and even turning the food left overs from our cafes into soil through a giant composter!
