Japanese Painted Fern

Athyrium nipponicum pictum syn. Mettalica

The Japanese painted fern is a really distinctive small fern with silver-green fronds and a mid-rib flushed with maroon-purple, which deepens in winter.

A striking fern that looks good in a mixed border or in a container.

This is a deciduous fern so will lose leaves during the winter period. As the new fronds grow in the spring they appear painted, and is truly beautiful in shaded gardens.
