Viper's Bugloss Seeds

Viper’s Bugloss is the most gorgeous bee plant. Great all wildflower gardens.

The Viper’s bugloss (Echium vulgare) is a species of echium native to Europe. Here at the Eden Project we have some great specimens of echiums more commonly found in South Africa, and these can reach enormous heights! Mainly found in bare, open spaces, the echium is a sun loving plant that can deal with dryer areas.

The tall stems holds spiraling purple/violet flowers that are loved by bees for the flowering period of May until September. It is a biennial so the flowers will only appear in year two. As well as bees, the echium vulgare is also great for these butterflies:

  • Painted lady
  • Wood white

In some areas of the world viper’s bugloss is grown as an oilseed crop, similar to the evening primrose, because it contains a special fatty acid.

There are approximately 100 seeds in the packet which are from cultivated stock. Please do not scatter any of the seeds into the countryside.
