Although the Wollemi Pine is one of the most threatened plants on Earth it is also a survivor outliving the dinosaurs. Previously, the Wollemi Pine was presumed extinct as only fossil records remained until it was rediscovered in 1994 in Sydney’s Blue Mountains.
It tolerates heat, cold, sun and shade as well as different types of soil. They can survive temperatures of minus 12 degrees. They protect their growing tips during October by producing a waxy coating, although planting in a position away from cold winds is advisable.
Plants are approximately 1ft tall and are supplied in a 19cm pot.
Male and female cones are produced by the same tree on the tips of separate branches. Although Wollemi Pine have been seen to develop both cones when approximately 9 years old, it seems that they only become sexually mature between 12 and 15 years of age.
The Wollemi Pine can be pruned heavily, with as much as two-thirds of the plant size removed, spring being the best time for this. You can prune both the upright stems and the branches and new buds will usually generate from below the cut. If your Wollemi Pine has been planted in the garden as a feature tree, there is no need to prune unless you wish to reduce its size or encourage multiple-stemming
It is quite possible that your tree will produce many trunks over time with a dominant trunk which can reach up to 20 metres during its lifetime. In the Wollemi National Park, the oldest tree is nearly 1000 years old and has 100 trunks.
