The seeds have a strong aroma and spicy taste, they can be used as a condiment or spice to flavour cakes, breads and curries.

Sow outdoors where they are to flower. Prepare the ground well and rake to a fine tilth before sowing. Sow 6mm (1/4in) deep, in rows 30cm (12in) apart. For spring/summer flowering pot plants: sow in a cool greenhouse or conservatory in late summer/early autumn. Grow on in cool conditions in full light and water sparingly.
When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 15cm (6in) apart.
