Papaver somniferum and Campanula ‘Pritchard’s Variety’

There are over 500 varieties of campanula – which means ‘little bell’, though ‘Pritchard’s Variety’ has more of a trumpet shape. Its blowsy companion Papaver somniferum, the opium poppy, was known as ‘the joy plant’ by the Sumerians.

Its narcotic properties have helped build empires, caused wars and destroyed lives, but are also the benchmark for all pain relief medication.
