Launch weekend

February 2019 sees the opening of a new permanent exhibit which explores the beauty and diversity of invisible ocean life through stunning imagery, film and soundscape. 

Come along on 2 and 3 February for a special launch weekend, where you can explore the new exhibition and get involved in a whole host of marine-themed activities which reveal the extraordinary invisible life in the world’s oceans. 

Stunning digital installation

Explore the extraordinary invisible life in the world’s oceans, in a stunning new visual and audio installation. OCEAN: PLANKTON CHRONICLES by Christian Sardet & The Macronauts features beautiful photography and footage of plankton, the weird and wonderful creatures that are vital to our life support system, all set to a mesmerising soundscape. 

Where and when: The Ocean exhibit (near the Orchard in the Outdoor Gardens), all weekend and beyond as a permanent exhibit. Its creators, Christian and Noé Sardet, will open the exhibit in the Gallery building on Saturday at 11am. They will also give a talk and book signing in the Dome Tent (in the Arena) at 1pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday. 

Whale workshops

Come face to face with creatures of the deep, including whales, dolphins, turtles, seals and basking shark. In these engaging, educational workshops featuring incredible life-sized inflatable models, children will learn how we can all make a difference for marine wildlife.

Operation Ocean show

Join the Eden Storytellers for fun and education as Earthy visits the doctors for a check-up of his waterworks. What will they find?

Where and when: Mediterranean Biome; 12pm, 1.30pm and 3pm

Marine art

See the haunting ‘Ghost net Dress’ on display, a powerful and provocative outfit made from discarded Cornish fishing nets. 

Where and when: Visitor Centre; 9.30am-6pm; 2-10 February

Craft workshops

Create your own piece of sea-themed craft to take home, including plankton mandalas and an oragami fish, with help from our team.

Beach Guardian workshops

Find out about marine plastics in educational and arty workshops with Cornwall’s own Beach Guardian

Where and when: The Dome Tent (in the Arena); 10am–5pm (Saturday only)

Science workshops

Join us in our state-of-the-art Lab to get to know plankton close-up, and to catch demonstrations and talks by the creators of our Ocean exhibition, Christian and Noé Sardet, and by marine biologists from Plymouth Marine Lab and the Marine Biological Association.
